Born and raised in the Central Valley, José is a bilingual (English/Spanish) first-generation Mexican-American, Associate Marriage and Family Therapist with nearly a decade of experience in the mental health and social-emotional wellness field. He earned his master’s degree in counseling, specializing in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling from Fresno State and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Global Studies with a minor in Pre-law from CSU, Monterey Bay.
José received his clinical experience at the Fresno Family Counseling Center (FFCC) of Fresno State, and the Fresno Rescue Mission. His expertise includes treating depression, self-esteem and self-love issues, grief/loss, sport performance, PTSD, acculturation challenges, behavioral issues, marital and premarital problems, parenting and co-parenting difficulties, school-related issues, spirituality, stress and anxiety, suicidality, and obsessive and intrusive thoughts. He has extensive training in suicide prevention, de-escalation, non-violent crisis intervention, behavioral analysis, and restorative practices.
Deeply passionate about his work, José believes in the human capacity to heal from issues, traumas, and setbacks. Grounded in mindfulness and self-compassion, he creates a therapeutic environment fostering growth and healing. Using an integrated approach, blending person-centered, CBT, DBT, ACT, EFT, and mindfulness therapies; José tailors his methods to empower clients, emphasizing their strengths and goals. He also incorporates an ecological systems theory perspective, recognizing the importance of understanding clients within their broader social contexts. He works with individuals, couples, and families from diverse backgrounds, addressing developmental disabilities, behavioral problems, and mental health diagnoses in various settings.
His background in social justice and community outreach equips him with the multicultural competence necessary to provide equitable access to services and address societal and structural factors contributing to conflicts and trauma. With nearly a decade of mental health work experience in the Central Valley’s diverse society, he has engaged with various populations, including different ethnic, socio economic, and spiritual backgrounds. José believes that multicultural competence is vital in effectively serving this
pluralistic community, and his diverse professional and personal background enhances his ability to connect with and support clients.
In his therapeutic practice, José prioritizes collaborative and strengths-based approaches, empowering clients to explore their challenges, build resilience, and discover their inherent capacity for growth and healing. Committed to providing a safe haven for the marginalized and underprivileged, José understands the importance of culturally sensitive, mental health support. His extensive volunteer work and professional experience underscore his dedication to helping clients find the right therapist and navigate the mental health system, ensuring each individual receives the care and resources they deserve.
